Week 4 in Békéscsaba

Hi!

This week there was a lot of work at church but we had plenty of time to teach and tract.

We met with an investigator who was found during the last transfer and we talked about the Book of Mormon. He has read the entire 1 Nephi and wrote a lot of notes in a booklet. During our conversation he practically taught us and told us what he has learned (i.e.,  Lehi's dream and meaning) and how to apply the teachings to our own life (i.e., Lehi's family and our families). He wants to come to church in the near future. A golden investigator!

We read a talk from the Liahona about the final judgment to another investigator because he wanted to learn more about this subject. He still does not want to come to church but said that he would come to English classes, so that's a first step. On Saturday we did service work at his house helping to move cut wooden logs.

During tracking we met a 91-year-old lady and she said that her birthday was that same day, but none of her relatives or friends came to celebrate with her, so we sang Happy Birthday to her. She wasn’t interested in our message and did not care much about our church, but we helped her to be happy and that was a good feeling.

We also met many less-active members of the church and helped them with some temporal needs (for example, we went to buy food for one). Another one, who has been struggling with alcoholism, now lives in a rehabilitation home near the town of Gyula and is doing well. He does not want to go back to alcoholism at all and they help him a lot in his new home. We would like to teach him the church's 12-step program.

We also had a zone conference this week and we talked about many topics: tabling, self-reliance, language study plan, and hope. Elder Szuch had a medical appointment in the evening, so we spent the rest of the day working in Pest and we saw the parliament building from outside, the 1956 memorials, Jewish shoes along the Danube, and the St. Stephen's Basilica. We also met members from Brisbane, Australia. They were very nice and took pictures with us. It was a great experience meeting them.

On Sunday I gave a talked in sacrament about King Benjamin's speech and about general conference, and also taught the Sunday school class about obedience. I had many opportunities to use the priesthood this week: I gave a blessing of comfort, set apart a member for a calling, and blessed an apartment. I'm beginning to get used to my calling and my duties look much more natural now than when I was first called to preside over the branch.

I love all of you. Enjoy general conference!

Elder Gonzalez
