Week 18 in Kecskemét

Hi!

This past week I was in Szeged on a day split with Elder Hughes. We set up a white board with pictures and a question: What makes you happy? It went really well, since many responded to the question on the board and we had good conversations. In addition to finding people, the teaching of the Book of Mormon was one of my goals for the split and we had two lessons where we introduced the Book of Mormon to people. It always feels special when I talk about this book to someone who has never heard of it.

On Thursday we had interviews and they went well. Transfers will be on August 30th, so the next p-day will be on Tuesday, August 29. I'm pretty sure that I'm going to a new city.

After the interviews we had our district meeting and the theme was the Word of Wisdom. We focused on the concerns of our investigators who are struggling with this law. Studying the lessons as a district helped us all to see how we can improve the teachings and how to properly explain a difficult topic. Elder Allred and Sister Manwaring had their one-year anniversary in the mission, so after the meeting we went to a restaurant and ate gyros.

Sunday was August 20 (St. Stephen’s Day). The weather was bad and not many things happened. But at half past 11 we heard fireworks, so we watched them from the balcony.

This week I also taught Elder Allred how to solve the Rubik's cube.

My spiritual message is from Mosiah 3:19. "For the natural man is an enemy to God, and has been from the fall of Adam, and will be, forever and ever, unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man and becometh a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord, and becometh as a child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father."

On Sunday one of the speakers talked about how to undress the natural man and become a saint, so after church I studied this verse. Why is the natural man and enemy to God if God created him? The answer is (at least I think) that there are two states: a spiritual state in which we were before our earthly life (premortal life) and in which we will be in the spiritual world after death, and a physical / natural / mortal state. God wants us to be in the spiritual state. He does not want us to stay in the mortal state. He sent us into the physical state to develop to the spiritual or sacred state. Often we say that we are here on the earth to get bodies and to be tested, but it would be better to say that we are here on earth to get bodies to be tested. And how to put down our natural skin and become a saint? By following Christ and trying to be like Him, by relying on his Atonement, and by following the laws of God (the ordinances, covenants, and commandments of the gospel). The essence of the gospel is to be better and therefore it is so important to work to improve ourselves.

Well, those were my thoughts about this. I hope that they were clear. And it was a good learning for me.

Lots of love,

Elder Gonzalez
